Remembering Shirley Loewen

On Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022, Shirley Loewen, long time friend of Heritage Winnipeg, passed away. Shirley was an active member of the community and passionate about many causes, including arts and culture. After starting her career as a nurse at Saskatoon City Hospital where she met her husband, Bill Loewen, Shirley and her family eventually made their way to Winnipeg. Here Shirley would take action on all sorts of issues, from organizing a crossing guard program to sponsoring immigrants, never backing down from problems she felt were important. After serving as the director of two successful businesses, Shirley shared her prosperity through philanthropy. It was in this giving spirit that in 2000, Shirley and her husband donated the former Bank of Commerce building at 389 Main Street, now the Millennium Centre, to the nonprofit organization that owns it to this day. Their charitableness ensured that the grand old building would be conserved in a manner befitting its heritage status, standing tall for years to come. Heritage Winnipeg is forever grateful for Shirley’s generosity and continued support of built heritage throughout the years, helping make our mission possible. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Shirley’s family and friends, she was a wonderful person that will be missed by the many whose lives she touched.
