City Buildings Move Forward for Designation

On Friday, May 17th, 2024, Heritage Winnipeg’s Executive Director Cindy Tugwell, Board member, Jim Smith, and Intern Lovissa Wiens observed a meeting of the Historical Buildings and Resources Committee (HRBC) at City Hall. The purpose of the meeting was to consider the nominations of several historical buildings and monuments on whether they should be added to the City of Winnipeg’s List of Historical Resources, which then would be designated to protect from demolition or unsympathetic alterations. The following properties were considered:

· St. Boniface Public Library, Coronation Park Branch (120 Eugenie Street) – City-owned
· St. Boniface Public Library, Provencher Park Branch (255 Avenue de la Cathédrale) – City-owned
· Fort Garry Public Library (1360 Pembina Highway) – City-owned
· Kildonan Park, Peguis Pavilion (2015 Main Street) – City-owned
· Customs Examining Warehouse (145 McDermot Avenue) – Federally owned
· Boy with the Boot Statue (460 Assiniboine Park Drive) – City-owned, under the care of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy

All of the nominated sites were recommended for designation by the HBRC committee – a win for the heritage community and Winnipeg! The final step for each nomination is to be approved by the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development. Thank you to the City of Winnipeg’s Director of Property and Development, and the HRBC Committee for supporting these nominations, allowing for the future protection of our city’s built heritage!
