2023 Red River Heritage Fair: Congratulations Winners!

This year, Red River Heritage Fair was held on May 4th at the University of Winnipeg. Returning for the first time in three years, it was also the 30th anniversary on the event. The Heritage Fair program encourages students from grades 4 and 11 to explore the history of our country in a dynamic and hands-on environment. Students use the medium of their choice to recount the stories of the people, events, familial events and key moments from Canadian history, with the best projects from the 15 participating schools being showcased at the University.

On Heritage Fair day, students presented their research, responded to questions from judges and shared their projects with fellow students, parents, teachers and community members. Projects are judged on a variety of categories by volunteers, with Heritage Winnipeg’s President, Greg Agnew, being one of them this year. Agnew also presented the “Heritage Winnipeg Award” to three outstanding students: Grant Park High School’s Kezia Jenkins and Sebastian Silva for their project “History of the Street Car” and Assiniboine School’s Nieve Sala for their “Mysteries of the Legislative Building” project.

Alongside the student presentations, the Heritage Fair also featured a Ukrainian “Cirque du Soleil-esque” dance performance, scavengers hunts and interactive workshops that are put together by local museums, historical societies and organizations. It was a busy day filled with exploration, learning and fun, challenging students to grow as individuals and deepen their appreciation for history. Congratulations to everyone who made the return of the Red River Heritage Fair such a successful event and to all the hard working students!
