Community Advocacy Leads to Repair at the Odd Fellows Home

In August, a Charleswood community member alerted Heritage Winnipeg to a fallen pillar at the entrance to 4025 Roblin Boulevard, the 1923 Odd Fellows Home. The pillar, one of a pair marking the entrance to the historic property, had toppled over, leaving a gap in a feature that has greeted visitors to the site for over a century.

While the Odd Fellows Home itself holds a well-known place in Charleswood’s history, the entrance pillars are not part of a designated heritage structure. However, because they sit on City of Winnipeg property, responsibility for their upkeep falls to the city rather than a private owner.

Once alerted to the damage, Heritage Winnipeg reached out to the City of Winnipeg’s heritage planner to flag the issue and request repairs. The response was swift. Within just one week, the pillar had been repaired and restored to its place at the entrance.

We’re delighted by how quickly the city took action to address the problem. This story shows how vital our community’s role is in protecting Winnipeg’s built heritage. Landmarks like this one often go unnoticed until something happens to them, and it’s the residents who know and love these places that help ensure small issues are caught early and addressed before they become bigger problems.

Heritage Winnipeg thanks the community member who brought this to our attention, and everyone who keeps a watchful eye on the heritage all around us.
