Winnipeg’s Built Heritage from the Eyes of George Siamandas
Heritage Winnipeg would like to thank Susan Siamandas for her generous donation of image slides of Winnipeg’s built heritage gems that were taken by her late husband, George Siamandas. These unique points of view that appreciate the beauty of our city is a treasure.
George Siamandas graduated from the University of Winnipeg for his undergraduate studies and later completed his Master’s Thesis on “Public Policy for Downtown Redevelopment in Winnipeg” from the University of Manitoba. Notably, he served as the Executive Director of Heritage Winnipeg until 1992 where he advocated for the revitalization of Winnipeg’s built heritage and for their protection and preservation. Siamandas also created some very memorable documentaries alongside PBS, including “Mennonites of Manitoba” and “Portage Avenue”. On top of all that, he had a very popular blog called “The Winnipeg Time Machine” where he shared history and some of the photos that he has taken over the years.
He had a great passion for photography and was able to capture beautiful scenes throughout the city. These images will be treasured and we look forward to sharing more with you all in the future!
