Historic places need YOUR help!

A parliamentary petition calling for funding for historic places in Budget 2019 is getting traction. Over 1,000 signatures have been secured, but we can reach 10,000 with the help of people like you!

Sponsored by Liberal MP John Aldag, the petition calls on the Minister of Environment and Climate Change to ensure substantial funding for historic places in Federal Budget 2019.

How you can help:

1. Sign the e-petition if you haven’t already
2. Share the e-petition with your contacts – can you get three friends or colleagues to sign it too?
  • Retweet our pinned tweet
  • Share our pinned Facebook post
  • Circulate the link to the e-petition: https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-1778
3. Collect signatures on the paper version of the petition

By adding your signature, you send a message that federal investment is needed to support the efforts of Canadians including Indigenous Peoples, charities and not for profits to save and renew historic places, and to encourage private sector investment and heritage philanthropy.

The goal of the Year of Action to #changethegame4heritage is to secure thousands of signatures, help you meet with your Member of Parliament this summer, and host a Day of Action on Parliament Hill in the fall – just in time for MPs and cabinet ministers to include a substantial fund for historic places in their priorities for Budget 2019. Stay tuned for updates and instructions throughout the summer.

Shards from Winnipeg Opera House for Sale!

Own a piece of Winnipeg’s history! Heritage Winnipeg is selling two shards from the Winnipeg Opera House (later the Winnipeg Theatre), which was built in 1896. The shards were discovered during the excavation of the site in 2017 to build a new Hydro station.

The Winnipeg Opera House in 1900 from Archives of Manitoba.

Shard 1 is about feet long by 2.5 feet wide and weighs about 250-300 pounds.

The location of shard 1 in the theatre, picture from Archives of Manitoba.

Shard 2 is about 3 feet long by 2 feet wide by 2.5 feet high and weighs about 100 pounds. It seems to be a header over a door, but with no good pictures available, that is just a guess. The only sure thing is that it is part of the theatre.

Top Ten Endangered List

As of May 23, 2018, The National Trust for Canada launched the 2018 Top Ten Endangered List of historic buildings. This year, the former Carnegie Library and City of Winnipeg Archives is on the list.  The Carnegie Library, built in 1905 with a $75,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie, was severely damaged by a rainstorm in 2013 while undergoing renovations. Although a designated heritage building, its future is uncertain - express your support for the preservation of this building by emailing us at info@heritagewinnipeg.ca

2018 Heritage Winnipeg Annual Preservation Awards

Since 1985, Heritage Winnipeg has sponsored an annual awards program that seeks to recognize those people dedicated to the protection, restoration and conservation of Winnipeg's built heritage. Awards are also given to owners of heritage structures who seek to sensitively restore their buildings so that they become a productive element of the economical, cultural and social fabric of the community.

Awards are presented in three basic categories:

  1. Distinguished Service Award

This award recognizes the special contribution of individuals or organizations that have demonstrated a concerted effort and leadership in protecting, conserving, promoting or communicating the historic and/or architectural values of Winnipeg's built heritage.

  2. Heritage Conservation Award

This award recognizes the special efforts and excellence in specific projects to protect, conserve and reuse structures of high historic or architectural value. Heritage Conservation Awards may be given specifically for commercial, institutional or residential projects that involve the sensitive and adaptive re-use of these structures and provide for their long-term protection.

Heritage Conservation Awards may be given to the owners of commercial, institutional or residential structures with historical and/or architectural value and who provide long-term protection and conservation of key architectural elements for these structure and their sensitive adaptive use. Special recognition may also be given to consultants and contractors of the project selected for an award.

In the case of a successful residential project, a special award will be given in the honour of C.W. Chivers, a well-known Winnipeg architect who designed buildings such as All Saint's Church, Balmoral Hall and the Assiniboine Park Pavilion.

  3. Youth Category

This award recognizes the special contribution of non-professionals under the age of 25.

Nominations may be made in more than one category. If possible, please enclose photographs or email digitized photos.

Questions relative to the requirements for a nomination may be directed to Ms. Cindy Tugwell, Heritage Winnipeg Executive Director, by phone (942-2663), fax (942-2094) or e-mail (info@heritagewinnipeg.com). The deadline for nominations is January 26, 2018. Completed nominations can be mailed to:

Heritage Winnipeg makes bid to save lavish Oak Room at the St. Regis Hotel: UPDATE

Heritage Winnipeg is proud to have worked with Brock Coutts in successfully preserving the Oak Room from the St. Regis Hotel! The Oak Room will be incorporated into Coutts' purposed whisky distillery, Patent 5, which will be located in the Dominion Express Company Building, a heritage building at 108-112 Alexander Avenue. Heritage Winnipeg is grateful for the corporation of Fortress Real Developments and Edenshaw Developments in the removal of the Oak Room from the St. Regis Hotel.

August 3, 2017:

Heritage Winnipeg hopes to preserve the historic Oak Room at the St. Regis Hotel, which is set to be demolished in August.

From the CBC:

With just weeks before the building is set to be demolished, Heritage Winnipeg is hoping to preserve the grandeur of the St. Regis Hotel's Oak Room.

Just as its name says, the century-old banquet area is extensively panelled in oak, where it has a storied history on the first floor of the old hotel on Smith Street.

Fortress Real Developments plans to build a commercial space and parkade after the demolition of the building begins in August

"What we'd like to see is some help or some support with the city and maybe someone in the private sector to help us dismantle the room, preserve it ... ultimately to be showcased in another heritage building," said Cindy Tugwell, executive director of Heritage Winnipeg
